Finding and booking a hostel is incredibly easy thanks to the Internet. The two biggest sites are HostelWorld.com and HostelBookers.com, but there are a few other sites like Hostels.com, Hostelz.com, and Hihostels.com. These sites are great because they allow you to read past reviews of other travelers so you can judge the quality of the hostel before you book it.
I mainly book with Hostelworld.com or HostelBookers.com (they don’t charge a booking fee) because they are the two largest sites, and they have the most hostel reviews/community base. Hostelz.com actually compares reviews and prices from all the major booking sites so they’re a great place to search for reviews. Additionally, they pay real travelers to review and take photos of hostels so they’re a helpful resource.
When searching for a hostel, simply enter your travel information and the site will give you a list of results. Each hostel is rated by fellow travelers, so you’ll get a good idea of if the hostel is worth booking. You can also see videos, pictures, amenities, and directions. You book your reservation by paying 10% of the total payment (by credit/debit card) and then you pay the remainder of the payment directly to the hostel when you arrive. It’s super easy.
Once I’ve entered my travel dates and location into the booking site I dive deeper into the results. I prefer to first filter by rating to see the best rated hostels. But you should also look at the number of reviews because some hostels might have a really high rating but only have a few reviews. I’d rather book a hostel with a slightly lower rating but with a few hundred reviews than a hostel with higher reviews but only ten to fifteen reviews.
Then I look a little closer at the reviews. Most sites break down the reviews into six categories: character, security, location, staff, atmosphere, and cleanliness. You’ll have to decide which categories matter the most to you. Be sure to read the written reviews of past travelers, as they can put a story behind the guests' reviews. By doing a little homework, you can find some truly amazing hostels.
